What to Bring

Fishing Gear, Clothing and Personal items

The gear and tackle we use in Patagonia is similar to what you would use for trout fishing in the rest of the world, so if you already have gear and tackle for trout fishing, likely you will have almost everything you need. If you don’t, we are proud to be a full service outfitting company and are happy to supply you with anything you might need during your trip. Below you will find a guideline to help you, it's not necessary you have everything… is just a recommendation.

Fly Rods & Reel. Each angler should have two rods available for the trip from 5wt to 8wt. We use 9` foot, 6 weight fast action rod, ideal for Patagonia. Each rod should be rigged with floating and sinking lines. The reel should be equipped with a smooth, reliable drag system and spare spools. Filled with 100yds of 20lb high-visibility backing.

Fly Lines. The proper fly line is more important than the rod, reel or fly. You will need 2 lines (one for each rod) to effectively fish these areas and adjust to the constantly changing conditions. Weight Forward floating line and the most important fly line in your arsenal a 30' fast-sinking head. Usually 200 or 250 grain will work.

Leaders & Tippets. You will need two 9’ feet leaders with: 4X, 3X & 2X tippets for floating lines and two 6’ feet with 3X, 2X, 1X tippets for sinking lines (knotless tapered leaders, preferably). Tippets you will need 0x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x.

Dry flies. Royal Wulff, Irresistible, Elk Hair and Goddard Caddis, (sizes 18-12, 16 being favorite) Stimulators (size: 12 and 10) Madam X, Chernobyl Ant, Hoppers. Sizes: 10 and 6, quantity: 3-4 of each; Dragon Flies (just a few).

Streamer flies. Beadhead Wooly Buggers with rubber legs; olive, black and brown; BH or weighted Rabbit Strips or Bunnies, Matukas, similar colors, yarn or seal fur Leeches similar colors including red, Bitch Creek and other big bright streamers. Size: 8- 4, quantity: 3-4 of each.

Nymphs. Prince and Pheasant tail; Hare's Ear, tan, green, black; CDC Caddis Emergers, Sparkle Caddis Emergers. Size: 14-18, quantity 3-4 of each. Green scuds, size 18.

Clothing and Personal items

The summer climate of this region is extremely changeable, a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions should be expected. We recommend layering clothing, enabling you to add or subtract garments during the day. Pack Polar fleece jackets, thermal underwear, polar neck, wool socks and a wool cap to be prepared for the extreme. Flannel or chamois cloth shirts and polar are ideal for the stream.
