Limay River

The Fish and Location: 30 minutes driving from San Carlos de Bariloche, Limay River hold abundant population of large Browns over 4 pound to some in the 8 to 14 pounds range. Also, there are many Rainbows averaging between 16 to 20 inches.

The River: As the natural outlet to Lake Nahuel Huapi Lake, the world-famous Limay is the main river in our system that flows through the entire Patagonia and reaches to the Atlantic Ocean after joining with the Neuquén and forming the Río Negro. The free-running Limay River, a stretch of about 55 miles… is the section we fish, before it empties its waters into the first lake. In this river, the biggest close to Bariloche, the water is crystal clear and the presence of willows on the bank is common.

It is usual to have the chance especially at the beginning and end of the season, of catching some over 6 to 8 pound Brown, which makes it a very attractive stretch of water. Also it is possible to reach the closest of the private access stretches of this river, which allows a pleasant day, without a fishing pressure. This river can be divided into three sections. We typically fly-fish one section in one day. In the afternoon, take a break from fly fishing and stop for a riverside lunch with fine wine.

We suggest a stiff rod loaded with shooting heads for fly fishing. Long casts are recommended to cover as much water as possible. Most fly fishing is done with streamers, but dry flies are good for some of the shallow riffles. With average water levels, we recommend a 6 to 8 weight fly fishing rod.
